Attention theatre-lovers: The trend of behind-the-scenes performing arts TV shows continues, with “Smash” premiering on Feb. 6 on NBC. This one shows the work that goes into a Broadway musical, getting it to opening night. Should be fun! And if you like the concept, you’ve got to read “Bit Players, Has-Been Actors and Other Posers” — it may not be a Broadway show the Crudup Drama Club is presenting, but it’s just as important to them.
One other thing about “Smash” — they’re hyping a video of Katherine McPhee (remember her from Idol a few years ago?) singing Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”, to which I say WHAT??? Who in their right mind covers anything sung by Aguilera? Who in their right mind thinks they can top her vocals? McPhee has a pretty voice but none of Christina’s power. What do you think?
That’s great – I can’t wait to watch it! When we lived in London there was a show where Andrew Lloyd Webber was searching for the next Dorothy for his musical based on The Wizard of Oz – I loved it! As for anyone covering Christina, that is just wrong. I remember Katherine and she is good, but it’s just pointless to try that…
